Product Name: Autoline™ Sapphire Orifice Assembly (0.007″ / 0.178 mm) – Part No. 05109079

Description:
This component is a synthetic sapphire orifice assembly, specifically designed for Autoline™ series abrasive waterjet cutting heads . It is a precision consumable component that creates the initial ultra-high-pressure waterjet before it enters the mixing chamber where abrasive is added. The orifice diameter is 0.007 inches (0.178 mm) .

The orifice assembly consists of a stainless steel housing containing a synthetic sapphire (corundum) disc with a laser-drilled microscopic hole. Sapphire is an extremely hard material, second only to diamond, providing excellent wear resistance in abrasive cutting environments. The precision orifice controls and shapes the high-pressure water stream as it exits the cutting head, enabling a focused and concentrated jet for precise cutting of various materials including metals, stone, glass, and composites .

This component is rated for continuous operation at 60,000–94,000 PSI (approximately 4,137–6,480 bar) and is compatible with Autoline™ I and Autoline™ II cutting head assemblies . According to the KMT Autoline™ Sapphire Orifice specification table (Table 12-47), this orifice is listed with a 0.007 inch (0.178 mm) diameter .

Applications:

  • Generates the initial coherent high-pressure waterjet before abrasive mixing in Autoline™ series cutting heads

  • Installed in the upper section of the cutting head assembly, positioned above the mixing chamber and focusing tube

  • Suitable for ultra-high pressure waterjet systems operating at 60,000–94,000 PSI (4,137–6,480 bar)

  • Used for precision cutting of hard materials including metals, stone, glass, ceramics, and composites

Features:

  • Sapphire Construction: Manufactured from synthetic sapphire, providing excellent wear resistance and longevity under normal operating conditions

  • Precision Laser-Drilled Orifice: The 0.007 inch (0.178 mm) diameter hole creates an extremely precise, coherent waterjet for optimal cutting performance

  • Standard Service Life: Sapphire orifices typically last 20–40 hours under good operating conditions, depending on water quality and pressure

  • Stream Control: The orifice controls and shapes the high-pressure water stream, enabling a focused and concentrated jet for precise cutting

  • Cost-Effective: More economical than diamond orifices, making them suitable for many standard cutting applications

  • Autoline™ Compatibility: Specifically designed for Autoline™ style cutting heads, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance

Maintenance:

Water Quality Protection (Critical):

  • Water Quality Impact: Poor water quality with contaminants, hardness, or inadequate filtration dramatically reduces orifice life. Sapphire orifices are vulnerable to impacts from debris traveling within the system and can chip or fracture if debris is present

  • Filter Requirement: A fine particle filter (last chance filter) should be installed just before the orifice to prevent particles from entering and damaging the orifice

  • System Flushing: After servicing the pump or replacing any plumbing, always flush the system thoroughly with both the orifice and filter removed before installing a new orifice

Cleaning and Inspection:

  • Visual Inspection: Before each operation, observe the waterjet at low pressure. A good water-only stream should be symmetrical, coherent, and brilliant

  • Jet Quality Check: If the stream becomes divergent, sprays, or the water column is not straight, the orifice is damaged and must be replaced

  • Inspect for Damage: Check the orifice for mineral deposits, plugging, or visible wear. Even minor surface damage affects jet coherence and cutting performance

  • Discard When Damaged: When a sapphire orifice shows a bad stream, it should be discarded and replaced. Unlike diamond orifices, sapphire orifices cannot be restored by cleaning

Replacement and Handling:

  • No Fixed Replacement Schedule: Replace the orifice when the waterjet shows divergence, sprays, or cutting performance degrades

  • Clean Installation: Before installing a new orifice, thoroughly clean the cutting head assembly to ensure no debris or contaminants are present

  • Handle with Care: Sapphire is hard but can chip or crack if mishandled; avoid dropping or striking the orifice against hard surfaces

  • Storage: Store spare orifices in a clean, dry, protective container to prevent dust contamination or physical damage

Performance Maximization:

  • Orifice to Mixing Tube Ratio: For optimal cutting performance and extended mixing tube life, maintain a 1:3 diameter ratio between the orifice and mixing tube. For a 0.007 inch orifice, use a 0.021 inch mixing tube

  • Rotate Mixing Tube: Rotate the mixing tube regularly (typically 120° every 8 hours) to distribute wear evenly and extend component life

  • Use Quality Abrasive: Use only clean, dry, high-quality garnet abrasive. Wet or contaminated abrasive can cause clogging and accelerated wear

  • Clean Environment: Perform all maintenance in a clean area. Wear disposable gloves to prevent natural oils and contaminants from being introduced to the orifice

  • Full Depressurization: Always fully depressurize the waterjet system and follow lockout/tagout procedures before any maintenance
